Social networking site Twitter is rumoured to be launching a new music site, following the purchase of WeAreHunted.com.

The music discovery site has confirmed that they are shutting down and that Twitter has bought them out. They added: “there’s no question that Twitter and music go well together.”

The microblogging site actually acquired We Are Hunted last year, meaning that the new site has been in the works for a while now.

The Twitter music app, which could be announced as soon as Friday, follows a recent boom in digital downloads. Hosted by companies such as Spotify, Twitter users will be able to stream music instead of having to purchase digital tracks or albums.

The newly launched music.twitter.com site is expected to offer personalised music recommendations through its own app, as well as featuring the hashtag #music.

Celebrity Ryan Seacrest took to Twitter today to quash any doubts that music.twitter.com may not actually exist, saying “playing with @twitter’s new music app (yes it’s real!)… there’s a serious dance party happening at idol right now.” He later added: “lovin the app…shows what artists are trending, also has up and coming artists…spinning u now @frankturner”.

Twitter boasts 200 million global users, with an average of 400 million tweets being posted to the site every single day.

Correct me if I’m wrong, buttttt doesn’t Myspace own so many patents on social networks that this is doomed to be crap, or get them sued?
