Excitement hit fever pitch when this morning it was announced that Kate Middleton had gone into hospital and it was officially announced she was in the early stages of labour.

The hordes of people who had been camping outside the hospital finally felt relief that the time had nearly come, and patients of the hospital struggled to get to the main entrance through the crowds of television crews and well-wishers.

Photographer Jesal Parshotam broke the news Kate had arrived at the hospital through his Twitter account just before 6am:

While the crowds went wild, the media exploded with news of Kate’s labour spreading like wildfire across social media platforms such as Twitter. When the baby boy was finally announced at 8:30pm on Monday July 22th, there had already been 291,000 tweets using the hashtag #RoyalBaby, but within the first hour of the baby being announced, the news of the royal baby boy had generated over 100,000 more. The total is now at nearly 600,000 tweets:

The #RoyalBaby hashtag has also been trending on Twitter all day with #ItsABoy and #RoyalBabyBoy trending after the announcement. The Twitter blog stated that the peak of Twitter conversation was at 8:37pm with over 25,000 tweets a second being sent.

Everybody had been celebrating the imminent birth of the royal baby in their own way, idle artists with, slightly weird, fan art:

And many people had set up parody accounts for the baby under Twitter handles such as @middletonchild, @iamroyalbaby and @royalfetus leading the way with over 16,000 followers:

Celebrities, politicians and fans across the world have taken to Twitter to congratulate Kate and William and show their excitement for the exciting news.
