Little known keyboard shortcuts for SEOers

Check out a few crafty shortcuts

It goes without saying that keyboard shortcuts can be a massive help, especially when you’re working on a big project in Excel.

With that in mind, here are some important and little known keyboard shortcuts across Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Chrome and AdWords Editor.

Microsoft Word

Something here for content writers, as a few of these can come in very handy for those that have their fingers tied to a keyboard for eight hours a day:

  • Control + Backspace = Deletes entire words at a time
  • Control + Delete = Deletes the entire word to the right of the cursor
  • Control + Direction keys = Scrolls the cursor a word at a time
  • Control + Shift + Direction keys = Highlights whole words at a time
  • Control + Shift + V = Pastes information without formatting
  • Control + Shift + L = Create quick bullet point
  • Control + Shift + > = Increase font size
  • Control + Shift + < = Decrease font size
  • Alt + Control + F2 = Open new document
  • Control + Mouse Wheel = Zoom in and out of document

And finally, probably the most important shortcut from an SEO perspective:

  • Control + K = Insert Link

Microsoft Excel

Although many shortcuts work across all office programmes, there are a few that are exclusive to certain programmes and some that are more important in others. With that in mind, here are some great Excel shortcuts:

  • Control + ; = Enter today’s date
  • Control + ‘ = Copies the contents of the above cell
  • Control + Shift + L = Set filters
  • Control + A + C = Clear filters
  • Control plus + plus - = Delete cell
  • Highlight cells + Control + D = Copies anything from top cell to other cells
  • Control + Shift + Up/Down Arrow = Select all data in the column
  • Shift + Space = Select Row
  • Control + Space =Select Column
  • Control + PgUp = Switches between worksheets from left to right
  • Control + PgDn = Switches between worksheets from right to left
  • Control + Shift + ~ = Applies general number format
  • Control + 1 = Displays format cells dialog box

Chrome

Officially the most used internet browser on the planet, there’s probably not one SEOer who doesn’t use Chrome, so here are some crafty keyboard shortcuts for it:

  • Control + T = Open a new tab
  • Control + W = Close a current tab
  • Control + Shift + T = Open the last tab you closed
  • Control + 1,2,3 etc. = Scroll between corresponding tabs
  • Control + H = Open history page.
  • Control + Shift + M = Switch user
  • Middle Mouse Button = Opens link without using Control and right mouse button
  • Control + Shift + I or Control + Shift + J = Open developer tools/ Javascript Console
  • Control + U = View webpage source

Adwords Editor

There’s no denying that PPC guys generally know their stuff, but here are a few shortcuts that might have been looked over:

  • Control + P = Check Changes
  • Control + Alt + P = Check changes in selected campaigns
  • Control + Shift + F = Open Advanced Search
  • Control + Shift + S = Sort rows in the data view
  • Control + Shift + V = Paste items into selected ad groups
  • Control + Alt + V = Paste negatives into selected campaigns
  • Control + Shift + K = Add or update multiple keywords
  • Control + Alt + K = Remove multiple keywords
  • Control + Shift + L = Add multiple negative keywords
  • Control + N = Add draft CPC campaign
  • Control + Shift + D = Add draft CPM campaign
  • Control + Shift + G = Add multiple ad groups
