The 2015/16 Premier League season is well and truly underway, and needless to say it’s not quite been what we’d expected. There were a number of ‘upsets’ throughout the opening weekend, much to the delight of the bookies, and our Foxes fanatic MD, Fergus.

We caught up with Joe Crilly of William Hill to find out how the opening weekend played out for the bookies.

How much money was staked in the opening Premier League weekend?

William hill laid roughly £10 million on Premier League football on the opening weekend and fortunately for us Chelsea, Everton and Arsenal not winning meant it was a successful weekend for us.

How did it compare to that of last season?

Roughly the same as last season, though the domestic fixture list started a little earlier this year as there was no major Championship in the summer.

What was the most popular bet placed?

Everton to win at home against Watford was the most popular selection, closely followed by Chelsea to beat Swansea in the evening live match. Both games were drawn and consequently we were very happy with the start we made to the season.

What was the most popular method of betting for punters? Mobile/desktop/in store

Retail has traditionally been the most popular method of betting in the UK but in recent years online has taken over and is now bigger. This market has fragmented further still with the advent of mobile betting and as the technology keeps improving then more and more of our clients are placing their bets from their smartphones.

Were there any ‘crazy’ wins/bets?

We have seen phenomenal interest in our ‘Prem Predictor’ product which gives customers the possibility of winning £50m for just a two pound stake. All they have to do is correctly predict the exact finishing order of the Premier League (!) and they will receive a life changing amount of money!!!
