Declining search traffic for troubled travel destinations
Keywords After recent events in key travel destinations around the world, Google have reported a sharp decline in searches for troubled travel destinations. This trend is highly notable for large portals and operators with a decline of up to 90% in some key destinations.
Egypt, one of the most popular year round destinations has been in decline since 2009 with a sharp decrease in 2011 due to the revolt against Hosni Mubarak. After the recent events this notable destination has shown a further severe decline in search traffic.
This trend is being noticed on key search terms as well as hotel and resort destination search phrases.
Year on year most travel portals will naturally see a decline in search for most North African countries and the surrounding destinations since the Middle Eastern revolts.

This general drop in searches is a trend across some of the most booked all-inclusive travel destinations in Europe and North Africa.
Earlier this week the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) released their latest update showing the current advice on where to travel safely.
The trends we are seeing in Google searches will be affected by the FCO’s advice.
